The climate of Changchun is in the transition belt between the eastern humid hilly region and the western semiarid flat region, a continental sub humid monsoon climate of medium latitudes. The east and the south are not far away from the sea, yet Long White Mountain obstructs and slacks down summer monsoon; the west and the north are the flat Songliao Plain, continental polar airs from Siberia proceed without hindrance and various monsoons have serious effect here.
So the climate characteristics here is: it has distinctive four seasons with very long and extremely cold winter; dry and windy spring; very short and warm summer; and sunny and cloudless autumn with large difference in temperature. Annual average temperature here is 4.8℃.
Changchun only has a history of 200 years and it is a brisk young city. As the provincial capital, it is the political, economical and cultural center of Jilin Province. Changchun is a beautiful city, one of the first "excellent tourist cities in China". It is an important city in China, reputed as "automobile city", "technological and cultural city", "film city" and "forest city". Her forestation coverage is over 38.8%, which is listed in the very front rank in large cities of China. Famous scenic spots in Changchun include:
Jingyue Lake National Forest Park -- It is famous for its picturesque scenery, reputed as the sister of Sun-moon Lake of Taiwan Province. The scenes here are different all the year around. It is cool in dense shades in summer; in winter the snow is over 30 cm and forms a natural ski field.
Palace Museum of the Bogus State of Manzhou -- Set up on the site of the palace of the Bogus State of Manchou, it is the residence of the last emperor in the Qing Dynasty- Puyi when he was acted as the emperor of the Bogus State of Manzhou.
Century Center of Changchun Film Studio -- It is a park with distinct screen culture and rich ethnic culture. It uses film and video programs as its carriers to uncover the mysterious veiling of filmmaking and to let visitors enjoy high-grade cinema art.
Banruo Temple -- It is the largest Buddhist temple in Changchun, the location of Chuanchun Buddhist Association and the Buddhist Association of Jilin Province. On important Buddhist days, many people come here.
Shuidiaohu Scenic Area -- It is a beautiful newly built scenic spot. There are chains of mountains, odd-shaped stones, quiet canyon and bubbling brooks.
The best time for traveling is summer and autumn. Winter here can be tough. It does not snow too much due to the low humidity, but cold begins on late October and lasts until early April. And during November and March temperature never rises above 0C (32F). So bring enough cold protective clothing, like overcoats, down coats, jackets, scarf, hats, and gloves, etc. Streets are paved with ice after the snow falls. Driving can be tricky. As the weather is too dry and the Siberian north wind cuts like blade, consider also the extra luggage on hand and body lotions.
