Located in the south of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Guyuan city is connected with Gansu province at three sides, bordering Zhongwei county and Tongxin county in the north. With an area of 16,783 square meters and a population of 1,868,500, it governs Guyuan, Haiyuan, Xiji, Longde, Pengyang and Jingyuan counties. Being one of the main gathering places for Hui minority in Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Hui minority occupies a percentage of 47.6% in the total population. Guyuan, with a long history, is on the northern route of the ancient Silk Road. State or county was ever set up here by seven dynasties and it was a town of military importance of several dynasties and also the converging point of northern nomadic culture.
