Gelmu City is on the lakefront of the Gelmu Lake in the south-central part of Qaidam basin. As an industrial and transport city firstly constructed in the 50’s, the city is of a distinguished style in that it was built on the gobi desert. Located in the south-central part of Qaidam basin which is called "the golden treasure" and in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau entitled the "third pole" paralleling with the South Pole and the North Pole in the world, it is an oasis with the snow thaw from the Kunlun Mountain. As an important transport junction in the western China which connects Tibet, Sichuan, and Xinjiang and the starting point of Gela section in the Qinghai-Tibet railway, it has built third dimensions of transport network.
