Urumqi is located in the temperate zone and has a continental climate. The average annual temperature is 6.4 centigrade. Winter is cold and temperature averages -15.2 centigrade. Although inhospitable in winter with bone-chilling weather, Urumqi's climate is pleasant in autumn, with warm days and cool evenings. An extensive series of tree belts around it has helped to reduce wind, dust, and cold. The best time to travel Urumqi is from May to October.
Located at the foot of the snow-capped Tianshan Mountain Range, Urmuqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest of China. The place became known to foreign visitors mainly for its role as the last stopover along the" Silk Road". Urumqi has a long history. The place has been home to a mix of ethnic groups for nearly 2,000 years and became a heavily guarded fort in the Han Dynasty. The ancient Chinese Silk Road went through Xinjiang, known at that time as the Western Regions, and made Urumqi an important stopover. Famous scenic spots in Urumqi include:
Red Hill -- At the city center is the symbol of Urumqi and a unique and spectacular part of the Urumqi landscape. The hill is made up of impressive red rocks. It stretches 1.5 kilometers from east to west and is 1 kilometer wide.
Heavenly Lake -- Nestling high in the Tianshan Mountain, 115 kilometers west of Urumqi, the superlative beautiful Tianchi Lake lies 1980 meters above sea level and is hemmed in by the towering snow-capped Bagda Peak.
South Pasture -- It is located 60 kilometers away from Urumqi city which is about, about 2 hours drive. It is a vast natural area with fascinating scenery.
Xinjiang Museum -- It presents a wonderful collection of items from the local area as well as items from other areas on the ancient Silk Road. It has a large collection of silk items from many periods of history.
Erdaoqiao Market -- It is the largest retail and wholesale market for ethnic minority goods in Xinjiang. Night scene at the market is especially interesting. The whole area is lit up with colorful lights creating a very impressive scene.
Spring is refreshing while a little cold. It snows occasionally.Summer is beautiful when flowers are in full boom and grasslands turn to green. It can be hot but the beauty is everlasting. Autumn is the best season to visit Urumqi. As the weather cools, the city is shrouded by colors and scent of ripe fruits. Snow is common in winter and it's very cold. It's the low season, less crowded and cheap to travel.
